We don't have a tiny kitchen but LACKS ANY natural sunlight. North window and West window that has a porch over it :S. I painted the cupboards a minty greenish color (concoction of paint i had in the basement, thats how we roll around here) and Spray painted the hardware. REALLY lightened it up a TON! I get complements on it all the time. Also left a cupboard door off one cabinet next to the sink. SUPER easy to put dishes away Plates/bowls on one shelf, glasses on another, coffee mugs on another and wine glasses on another. HOWEVER the wine glasses NEED to be relocated. Every time I want one (which may be often) I need to either 1. get a chair or 2. hop on the counter... hum... (painted inside of cupboards white and then have just plain white dishes)
I Love the idea of some open upper cabinets/shelving! Great call! And I think I saw a peek of that green in one of your photos on the blog and really loved it!!! We registered (and received most) for all white dishware from Crate And Barrel for the wedding and I'm excited to reorganize it in our glass doored cabinets at the new house in the future! AND I'm just like you...I'm on my knees on the counter tops to get to my wine glasses...who are we kidding...we should just leave them out;)
